Does every red stinkhorn smell equally bad?
No. Odor intensity varies among species and with the mushroom’s stage of development.
The smell is often strongest when the spore-bearing material is fresh and exposed. As the mushroom ages and dries out, the odor may diminish.
If the fungus has already begun to collapse, you might notice very little smell at all.
