Have you ever walked into an older home, hotel room, office, or workshop and noticed something that looked just a little… wrong?
The electrical outlet was upside down.
At first, you might think someone installed it incorrectly.
Maybe the electrician made a mistake. Maybe the person who renovated the room wasn’t paying attention.
But here’s the surprising part:
An electrical receptacle being installed “upside down” isn’t necessarily a mistake at all.
In fact, there are practical reasons why some outlets are installed with the grounding opening on top instead of the bottom.

So why are some wall outlets upside down? Is one direction safer? Is there actually a “correct” way to install one? And what does that little third hole actually do?

First, What Does “Upside Down” Actually Mean?
When most people look at a standard North American electrical receptacle, they’re accustomed to seeing it installed with the two vertical openings on top and the rounded or U-shaped grounding opening underneath.
That’s the orientation many of us grew up seeing.
But sometimes you’ll encounter a receptacle installed the other way around, with the grounding opening at the top.
It can look strange.
Especially if every other outlet in the house is oriented the opposite way.
But electrically, simply rotating a standard receptacle 180 degrees does not reverse the function of the hot, neutral, and grounding contacts. The receptacle’s electrical connections remain connected to the same conductors.
So an outlet that looks upside down isn’t automatically wired incorrectly.
And that’s where things get interesting.
What Does the Third Hole Actually Do?
That little rounded opening isn’t decorative.
It’s the equipment grounding contact.
A grounded receptacle provides a connection to the equipment grounding conductor, which is an important part of the electrical safety system.
The grounding path can help carry fault current away from exposed metal parts of equipment and back through the electrical system, helping protective devices operate when a fault occurs.
That’s why modern grounded receptacles have three openings:
- A hot slot
- A neutral slot
- A grounding opening
The hot and neutral slots are different sizes on a polarized receptacle, helping ensure that a polarized plug is inserted in the intended orientation.
The third opening provides the grounding connection for compatible plugs.
So when you see that little U-shaped opening, you’re looking at an important safety feature.
